Present To My Dear Parents Who Appreciate Me Because of Love

My father is an artist who teaches me how to think freeIy and treat us sincereIy.

My mother encourages me in every important turning point that I have experienced and teaches me to face them at ease.

I can't repay their Iove, so I want to present this book to them.

I am so glad to hear that Liu Hui's photography collection Corner of Antarctica will be published. His travel to Antarctica was a sudden decision, so he departed soon after he accepted a friend's invitation without adequate deliberation and preparation. Before that, he knew little about Antarctica, only heard that the climate is changeable and there is seldom sunshine. 吀 erefore, at the beginning, he had no plan for photography, let alone intention to publish a book. He only carried a Nikon D300 camera and departed with simple luggage.

Good person has lucky experience. When Liu Hui came back, he told me that when he arrived at Antarctica, it's unexpectedly sunny weather with glowing rays. He was so excited by magnifi cent and spectacular scenery of glacier in front of him. Among more than two hundred visitors in the same vessel, many of them are well-prepared photographers. 吀 ey took out complete professional equipments, but Liu Hui only held an amateur Nikon D300 camera with single lens and took photos here and there among these professionals. I guess it's like the scene that a guerrilla held a home-made gun. Liu Hui said, because of huge waves, the vessel bumped badly, so people hardly kept their feet on the deck, even on the glacier, a tripod couldn't be used. He adjusted focal length of the D300 camera to utilize its advantages and avoid its disadvantages, which was fast and easy to operate.

Antarctica is always cold with gale, if you stay long out of the cabin, physical strength will be greatly consumed. Many people felt seasick and vomited after long time's trip, but Liu Hui said he had no problem on eating and sleeping and didn't get stage fright. Although pixel of Liu Hui's camera s is low, he enjoyed himself to the full and took so many photos, which is a comfort to him. When he returned to Shenzhen, I found many good works among his photos, so I am happy for him too.

In the past, Liu Hui only loved to read literary works and enjoy others' fi ne photographic works, but he didn't like to take photos by himself. It's occasional for him to study photography. It began from the snowstorm happened at Hunan, Hubei, Jiangxi and Anhui in 2008. I insisted on taking photos for snowy scenery in Huangshan Mountain at that time, for sake of safety, Liu Hui insisted on accompanying me. When my friends and I were busy on taking photos for world of ice and snow in Huangshan Mountain, Liu Hui was anxious with nothing to do, so he borrowed a Nikon FM2 body from a photographer and coupled with my spare 18-35mm zoom lens to start his study on photography. I go to Huangshan Mountain to take photos every year, as a dutiful son, Liu Hui accompanied me every trip from then on. His interest on photography also gradually increased. He bought professional cameras of Nikon D3X and D800 and a variety of professional lenses and tripod. Full loaded, he climbed Huangshan Mountain to fi nd beautiful sceneries, fi nally, he became a veritable photography fancier. People who do not know him even think he is a professional photographer.

Liu Hui's most outstanding features are diligence and persistence. In the past years, his aesthetic taste, ability to capture scenery, composition and other aspects are trained. In actual photography, his understandings on feeling, sense and composition are deepened too.

Liu Hui's major is electrical engineering automation, but under infl uence of family (his grandfather had taught in Shandong College of Arts, who are good at painting tiger and playing Pipa and Guzheng solo; I study painting and love photography), he likes to collect and read photographic books. When he traveled in U.S.A., he went to cultural market to buy some leafl ets of photographic works famous in photography history of the world. After returning to Shenzhen, he mounted them and hung in the study to enjoy these fi ne works. When he decorated the apartment, he highlighted characteristics of photography and hung large-sized photos he and I took in Huangshan Mountain, so that he and his friend can watch. Photographic works are also the media for him to make friends. He likes to turn on the computer late at night, in order to ponder his own photos, even stays up all night. I'm happy that he can inherit our family's cultural tradition.

Various pressures roll into middle age. Liu Hui came to Shenzhen for business in early 1990s when he was young without capital, and our family has no experience for business, so the diffi culties are imaginable. After 20 years' struggle, his business has a little development, but pressures of operation and management are still huge. His parents are both over eighty-year-old and need to be cared for, while his son is young and need to be brought up. He is also a patient of hypertension, hyperglycemia and hyperlipidemia, who takes medicines every day in past more than ten years. I think art is the best medicine to release pressure and divert attention. I hope Liu Hui keeps on art of photography in spare time of business, so as to build character and maintain sentiment.

Liu Hui's Corner of Antarctica will be published by China Photography Publishing House soon. He asked me to write the preface, but I can only say some stories about him instead of major principles. It's better to let readers and experts criticize and comment his photos. 吀 is is my preface.
