suffer/ ˋsʌfə / v. 受苦,遭受

[记] 词根记忆:suf(在下面)+fer(拿)→被拿在最下面→受苦

[例] The town suffered a lot of damage from the storm. 风暴给城镇带来了巨大的损失。

[考] suffer from... 忍受…,遭受…: She is suffering from a knee injury. 她在遭受膝伤的煎熬。

set/ set / vt.(set, set, setting) 设置,调整;树立;摆放;日落 n. 一套;设备

[例] I forgot to set my alarm and I overslept. 我忘记设闹铃,睡过头了。// He took the case out of her hand and set it on the floor. 他从她手里拿过箱子放在地板上。// Competition helps to set self⁃respect. 竞争有利于树立自尊心。

see/ siː / v.(saw, seen, seeing) 看见,看到;领会

[用] see可以接复合宾语,宾补是不定式(省略to)、现在分词或过去分词: I saw him drive off. 我看见他开车走了。// I hope to see the plan carried out. 我希望看到计划得到实施。

[例] go to see a doctor 去看医生 // Do you see what I mean? 明白我的意思了吗?

[考] 1. see to 处理,照料 2. see sb. off 给某人送行

stare/ steə / v. 盯着看,凝视

[记] 联想记忆: 凝视(stare) 星(star) 空

[考] stare at... 凝视…

spend/ spend / vt.(spent, spent, spending) 度过;花费(钱、时间等)

[用] 1. spend+时间+(in) doing sth. 在做某事上花费时间: People spent much more time watching TV than reading books. 人们花在看电视上的时间比花在读书上的时间多得多。2. spend+时间/金钱+on sth. 为某事物花费时间/金钱: In my opinion, it is not necessary to spend all this money on a new computer. 我认为花这么多钱买台新电脑没有必要。

辨:spend, cost, pay, take

这四个单词都有“用,花费”之意,区别在于: 1. 主语不同:spend, pay的主语是人,cost的主语是物,take的主语多为形式主语it。 如: He will pay the bill. 他会埋单。// The book cost me 20 yuan. 这本书花了我20元钱。// It takes a lot of money to buy a house. 买一栋房子要花一大笔钱。2. 宾语不同:pay的宾语是钱,take, spend和cost的宾语既可以是钱,也可以是时间,cost的宾语还可以是要付出的代价和损失等。如: It took me a lot of time to prepare for the speech. 准备演讲花了我很多时间。// His carelessness cost him his life. 粗心大意让他付出了生命的代价。

majority/ məˋdʒɒrəti / n. 多数

[例] The majority was/were in favour of banning smoking. 大多数人支持禁烟。

[参] minority(n. 少数,少数民族)

pour/ pɔː / v. 倾泻,不断流出

[记] 发音记忆:“破”→水罐破了,水流出→倾泻

[考] 1. pour...on... 把…倒在…: If you pour water on flowers, they will flourish. 给花浇水,它们就会盛开。2. pour...into... 把…倒进…: I opened a can of orange and poured the juice all into the bowl. 我打开一听橘汁,然后全部倒进了碗里。3. pour in 不断地涌入或涌出

step/ step / v.(stepped, stepped, stepping) 走;跨步 n. 脚步;台阶

[例] I took a few steps back. 我往后退了几步。

effort/ ˋefət / n. 努力,艰难的尝试

[例] individual/personal efforts 个人的努力

[考] make an effort to do sth. 努力做某事: My cousin made an effort to learn swimming. 我表弟努力学习游泳。

[参] effortlessly(adv. 容易地)

contribution/ ˌkɒntrIˋbjuːʃn / n. 贡献;捐款

[例] The big fish has made great contributions to the people who are badly in need of provisions after the disaster. 灾难发生后,这个大人物为那些严重缺衣少食的人们捐了很多钱。

[参] contributive(adj. 贡献的)

want/ wɒnt / v. 想要,需要

[用] 1. want to do... 想做…: We wanted to get back home before dark. 我们想在天黑前回到家。2. want sb. to do sth. 想让某人做某事: Parents want their children to be attentive to their studies. 父母想让孩子们专心学习。3. sth.+want+doing(to be done) 某事物需要被做: This work wants doing at once. =This work wants to be done at once. 这工作需要马上就做。need, require等动词也有类似的用法。

state/ steIt / n. 状态;国家;州 vt. 宣称

[例] state of health 健康状况 // state⁃run companies 国有企业 // A recent report stated that the number of Spanish speakers in the U.S. would be higher than the number of English speakers by the year 2090. 最近一份报告称,到2090年,美国说西班牙语的人将多于说英语的人。

[参] statement(n. 声明;陈述)

dusk/ dʌsk / n. 黄昏

[例] at dusk 在黄昏

pace/ peIs / n. 步子,步速;节奏

[记] 联想记忆: 跳舞不是赛跑(race) ,要跟上节奏(pace)

[例] The fence is only ten paces from the house. 围栏离屋子只有十步远。

[考] keep pace with... 跟上…(的步伐)

attract/ əˋtrækt / v. 吸引;引起

[记] 词根记忆:at(表加强)+tract(拉)→把注意力拉过来→吸引

[例] He tried to attract the attention of the lovely girl. 他试图引起那个可爱的女孩的注意。

[参] attraction(n. 吸引,吸引力)

almost/ ˋɔːlməʊst / adv. 几乎,差不多

[用] almost常与no, none, nothing, never等表否定的词连用: Almost no one believed him. 几乎没有人相信他。

辨:almost, nearly

两词都有“几乎,差不多”的意思,有时可以互换,但almost可与no, none, nothing, never等否定词连用,nearly却不可以;而nearly在句中可与not连用,almost不可以。

corner/ ˋkɔːnə / n. 角;角落;拐角

[记] 联想记忆: 学校里都有English Corner“英语角”

[例] The guest wanted to book a corner room with windows facing north. 客人想预订一间窗子朝北的拐角房。

report/ rIˋpɔːt / n./vt. 报道,报告

[例] The report on this research has been written three days ago. 这份研究报告三天前就写完了。

same/ seIm / n. 同样的事 adj. 同样的,同一的

[例] Your watch is the same as mine. 你的表和我的一样。

[考] 1. at the same time 同时 2. on the same day 同一天 3. in the same way 相同的方式 4. the same as... 和…一样

approval/ əˋpruːvl / n. 赞成;认可;批准

[例] John could not agree with anything without his partner's approval. 没有合作伙伴的认可,约翰不能同意任何事。

drink/ drIŋk / v.(drank, drunk, drinking) 喝 n. 饮酒

[例] a cool drink 冷饮 // You're drinking too much. 你喝得太多了。

grow/ grəʊ / v.(grew, grown, growing) 种植;生长,发育 link.v. 渐渐变得,变成

[用] grow to do... 渐渐(形成某种态度): I think you will grow to like him when you know him better. 我想,当你对他有更多了解之后就会渐渐喜欢他了。

[例] Do you grow many plants yourself? 你自己种许多植物吗?// The weather is growing cold. 天气渐渐变冷了。

[考] grow up 长大,成年

[参] growing(adj. 成长的;增加的)

start/ staːt / n./v. 开始,着手;出发

[用] 1. start+n./doing 开办、创办…: When he left university he had earned enough money to start his own business. 毕业时,他赚的钱已经足够创办自己的企业了。2. start+to do开始做…: They started to use English, but they also brought in some words from their own languages. 他们开始使用英语,但也把自己语言中的一些词汇带到了英语里。

[考] 1. start out 出发,动身 2. start off 出发,开始 3. start with... 以…作为开头

gifted/ ˋgIftId / adj. 有天赋的,有才华的

[记] 来自gift(n. 天赋,才华)

[例] Newton was a gifted scientist. 牛顿是一名有天赋的科学家。

oppose/ əˋpəʊz / v. 反对

[记] 词根记忆:op(反)+pos(放)+e→摆出相反的姿态→反对

[例] There are many people who oppose this view. 有很多人反对这种观点。

[参] opposition(n. 反对)

certain/ ˋsɜːtn / adj. 某些;确定的,无疑的;一定会…

[记] 词根记忆:cert(搞清)+(t)ain(拿住)→对搞清楚的事情很有把握→确定的

[用] 1. be certain to do sth. 肯定会,无疑: He is certain to agree. 他肯定会同意。 2. be certain of/about sth. 确信,肯定: I'm not certain of/about what she wants. 我不确信她想要什么。3. be certain that+从句: 确信,无疑: I'm certain that he saw me. 我肯定他看见我了。

observe/ əbˋzɜːv / v. 观察;遵守

[记] 词根记忆:ob(逆,反)+serve(服务)→不予以服务却只是看→观察

[用] observe作观察讲时,宾语形式有名词/代词、复合宾语和从句三种,即: 1. observe+n./pron.: He has observed stars all his life. 他一生都在观察星星。 2. observe+n./pron.+do/doing...(被动语态为be observed+to do/doing): I observed the film star walking in the street. 我见到那个电影明星在街上走。3. observe+从句: I observed what was going on between my parents. 我注意到我父母之间发生的事。

[例] Please observe the speed limit while driving. 开车时请遵守速度限制。

stainless/ ˌsteInləs / adj. 无污染的;无瑕疵的;不锈的

[例] For the sake of security, please use the stainless steel rather than iron. 为了安全,请用不锈钢,别用铁。

everywhere/ ˋevriweə / adv. 到处

[例] He follows her everywhere. 她到哪儿他都跟着。

visual/ ˋvIʒuəl / adj. 视力的,视觉的

[记] 词根记忆:vis(看)+ual(…的)→视觉的

concept/ ˋkɒnsept / n. 概念,观念

[记] 词根记忆:con(表加强)+cept(抓)→大脑里牢牢抓住的东西→概念,观念

probably/ˋprɒbəbli / adv. 很可能,大概

[例] I invited her to the party but she probably won't come. 我邀请她参加晚会,但是她可能不会来。

attitude/ ˋætItjuːd / n. 态度;看法

[考] one's attitude to/toward(s) sth.某人对某事的态度

conclude/ kənˋkluːd / v. 推论;断定;完成;结束

[记] 词根记忆:con(共同)+clud(关闭)+e→全部关闭→完成;结束

[例] Let's conclude this meeting before 5:00. 让我们在5点前结束这个会议吧。// He concluded that the theory was invalid. 他断定该理论不成立。

slow/ sləʊ / adj. 缓慢的 v. 放慢速度,减缓

[记] 联想记忆: 大风狂吹(blow),减速慢行(slow)

[例] She is a very slow eater. 她吃饭非常慢。

[参] slowly(adv. 慢慢地,迟缓地);slowness(n. 缓慢,迟钝)

hopeful/ ˋhəʊpfl / adj. 有希望的;有前途的

[例] Ann felt very hopeful that she would pass the English exam. 安觉得自己很有希望通过英语考试。
