CHAPTER 4 THE RICH SPOILT GIRL

But, none of them could say the same of Betty. She was in the same class as Keong. The daughter of a very rich man and being the only child in her family, she was very spoiltspoil v. 宠坏;惯坏. She was also proud. Her friends and classmates found it difficult to like her. They found her ruderude adj. 粗鲁的;粗暴的 and selfishselfish adj. 自私的.

They avoidedavoid v. 避免 sharing a table with her in the canteen. They saw her walking towards them in the canteen. They would walk away. Her classmates called her“Miss High Nose”. It was common to hear them say that.

Poor Betty. She had no friends and nobody to talk to. She had nobody to do homework with. She ate alonealone adv. 单独地;孤独地 in the school canteen.

Betty brought meat bunsbun n. 小圆甜面包 and fried chicken to school. But, she ate them alone. No classmates would sit with her. There was nobody to share her food with. And she refused to make the first move.

The maidsmaid n. 女仆 raised Betty. They attended to her every need. Yet, she shouted at them over nothing. Being proud, she thought they were only maids. The driver fetchedfetch v. 接(某人) her to school every day. She also shouted at him. So, none of them liked her.
