CHAPTER 3 Encoding motion events:linguistic devices and their acquisition
English is a satellite-framed language in which a motion event is characteristically expressed in a Verb + Satellite combination. In comparison, Chinese is proposed to be better described as equipollently-framed,with a motion event typically encoded in a verb compound which simultaneously encodes different aspects of motion (Manner,Path,Deixis,etc.).Moreover,two grammatical constructions, namely, the BA construction (a specific construction stressing on affectedness of the object) and the ZHE construction(similar to English complex sentences of the type while V-ing), are expected to be found in the expression of caused motion events in Chinese.Though they are not linguistic devices exclusively used to encode motion events, their co-occurrence with the RVC form in the context of caused motion expressions should be high given that an RVC alone can not adequately encode a caused motion event.
