3 Patterns of a Modern University Taking Shape

In its early stage, National Zhejiang University was located at the site of the previous Qiushi Academy. The University improved its conditions by establishing more new school buildings, exploiting farms and investing in more books and equipment, which laid a solid foundation for later development. In 1927, College of Labor and Agriculture prepared to build a botanical garden. 3.3 hectares of land was exploited at Jianqiao and over 2,000 species were collected for the garden. In 1929, the earliest college botanical garden in China was established, entitled “Botanical Garden of College of Agriculture of National Zhejiang University”.

In 1934, Zhejiang University bought land at Huajiachi for Building of the College of Agriculture. The then Minister of Education Wang Shijie, Minister of Transport Zhu Jiahua, Zhejiang University President Guo Renyuan attended the foundation stone laying ceremony (taken on April 15,1934).

In August 1934, buildings of the College of Agriculture were established and the College moved to Huajiachi Campus. Central Aviation School, Republic of China moved to the previous site of the College at Jianqiao. The photo shows the new school building of the College on Huajiachi Campus.

By the order of Department of Education of Zhejiang Province, from 1933 to 1937, Zhejiang University was commissioned with two secondary vocational schools, i.e. Zhejiang Provincial Hangzhou Advanced Industrial Vocational School and Zhejiang Provincial Hangzhou Advanced Agricultural Vocational School, which enlightened batches of learners who later became famous scientists and scholars. The picture shows Registration Record Card of Xu Guangxian, winner of Top National Science and Technology Awards, while he was studying in Zhejiang Provincial Hangzhou Advanced Industrial Vocational School.
