Mary:Well, that saves a lot of money. And your business is not confined by time and place.

Lily:You got it.I keep online information up to date.My customers make orders online and they can get their goods in a shorter time than in the traditional mode of sale.

Mary:But how can you assure them of after-sale service?

Lily:We communicate through E-mail or talk online.I try my best to provide satisfactory service and quality product.

Electronic commerce, commonly known as Ecommerce or E-commerce,is a type of industry where the buying and selling of products or services is conducted over electronic systems such as the Internet and other computer networks.Electronic commerce draws on technologies such as mobile commerce, electronic funds transfer(EFT),supply chain management,Internet marketing, online transaction processing, electronic data interchange(EDI),inventory management systems, and automated data collection systems.Modern electronic commerce typically uses the World Wide Web at least at one point in the transaction’s life-cycle,although it may encompass a wider range of technologies such as E-mail,mobile devices, social media, and telephones as well.

2.The History of Electronic Commerce

The meaning of electronic commerce has changed over the last 30 years. In terms of E-commerce evolution,it is necessary to pay attention to technical evolution related to E-commerce since E-commerce originated from computer techniques.Originally, electronic commerce meant the facilitation of commercial transactions electronically, using technology such as electronic data interchange(EDI)and electronic funds transfer(EFT).These were both introduced in the late 1970s,allowing businesses to send commercial documents like purchase orders or invoices electronically. The growth and acceptance of credit cards, automated teller machines(ATM)and telephone banking in the 1980s were forms of electronic commerce.Online shopping was invented in the UK in 1979by Michael Aldrich and during the 1980s it was used extensively particularly by auto manufacturers such as Ford,General Motors and Nissan. From the 1990s onwards, electronic commerce would additionally include enterprise resource planning system(ERP),data mining and data warehousing.

The earliest example of many-to-many electronic commerce in physical goods was the Boston Computer Exchange launched in 1982.The first online information marketplace was likely the American Information Exchange introduced in 1991.

It wasn’t until 1994 that E-commerce really began to accelerate with the introduction of security protocols and high speed Internet connections such as DSL,allowing for much higher connection speeds and faster online transaction capability.

By the end of 2000,a lot of European and American business companies had offered their services through the World Wide Web.Since then people began to associate the word“E-commerce”with the ability of purchasing various goods through the Internet using secure protocols and electronic payment services.

3.Big Events of E-commerce

Notes

1.Electronic commerce, commonly known as Ecommerce or E-commerce,is a type of industry where the buying and selling of products or services is conducted over electronic systems such as the Internet and other computer networks.

例如:“Asteroids, also known as‘minor planets’,are numerous in the outer space.”

2.Modern electronic commerce typically uses the World Wide Web at least at one point in the transaction’s life-cycle,although it may encompass a wider range of technologies such as E-mail,mobile devices, social media, and telephones as well.

例如:“Although he’s nearly 80,he is still very active.”

3.In terms of E-commerce evolution,it is necessary to pay attention to technical evolution related to E-commerce since E-commerce originated from computer techniques.

“since”引导的原因状语从句,可解释为“既然,由于”,在这个复合句中,主句部分“it is necessary to pay attention to”,“it”只是形式主语,真正的主语是动词不定式“to pay attention to”。例如:“It is necessary to set down these additional rules.”

4.It wasn’t until 1994 that E-commerce really began to accelerate with the introduction of security protocols and high speed Internet connections such as DSL,allowing for much higher connection speeds and faster online transaction capability.

“It was…that”结构在此处引出了强调句。强调句的句型结构为“It is(was)被强调部分+that(who)+句子其他部分”。强调句和“it…that…” 例如:“It was during the Second World War that he died.” 在去掉“it was…that”后,句子结构和意思完整:“During the Second World War he died.” Exercises

Text B Types of Electronic Commerce

E-commerce is the process of buying and selling of various products and services by businesses or individuals through the Internet. With significant increases in technology,E-commerce has revolutionized the way people do business.E-commerce allows business transactions to flow easily between countries. There are several types of E-commerce activities that transactions fall under.A widely accepted classification method is mainly categorizing E-commerce into B2B,B2C,C2B and C2C.

1.Business to Business(B2B)Model

B2B is a term commonly used to describe commerce transactions between businesses like theone between a manufacturer and a wholesaler or between a wholesaler and a retailer. In other words, both the buyer and the seller are business entities.Pricing is based on quantity of order and is often negotiable.B2B can be open to all interested parties or limited to specific,pre-qualified participants.

978-7-111-47362-6-Chapter01-11.jpg

2.Business to Consumer(B2C)Model

B2C is used when the business is a supplier, and the consumer is the purchaser. This model is the most familiar type of E-commerce.This is the type of electronic commerce conducted by companies such as Amazon.com.An example of B2C transaction would be a person buying a pair of shoes from a retailer. The transactions that led to shoes being available for purchase—the purchase of the leather, laces, rubber, etc.as well as the sale of the shoe from shoemaker to the retailer—would be considered B2B transaction. In addition,B2C E-commerce transactions are not strictly bound to retail shopping. Many customers purchase health insurance, auto insurance and similar products online. One reason for the popularity of B2C E-commerce is that consumers enjoy the convenience of purchasing products and services online.

978-7-111-47362-6-Chapter01-12.jpg

Figure1-2 B2C Mode:Microsoftstore.com

3.Consumer to Business(C2B)Model

C2B E-commerce occurs when a consumer is selling a product or service to a business. In this instance,a consumer is defined as a non-business entity. For example,a consumer that needs a website designed will place the details of the job on a bidding site along with his budget.Companies with experience in web design will submit bid proposals to the consumer. The consumer chooses a company, submits the agreed upon payment to the business and waits for the delivery of the website.

4.Consumer to Consumer(C2C)Model

Another popular E-commerce model is C2C which is an electronic Internet-facilitated medium that involves transactions between consumers utilizing a third party. The most common example of C2C is the online auction. In this form of C2C,consumers post items for sale and other consumers bid to purchase them. The third-party facilitating the C2C transaction generally charges a flat fee or C2C commission. These C2C sites act as intermediaries and usually take no responsibility for the quality of the C2C merchandise being sold.C2C is a modern day form of barter, flea markets, yard sales and swap meets, among others. The C2C model is convenient, because products are there whenever consumers are ready to find and buy them.Yet,C2C does have some disadvantages such as limited payment options and lack of quality control. Word Formation(构词法)(一)

Let me have a try.

He was about the same build as his brother.

Have you booked your ticket?

Hand in your book,please.

If so,we shall be badly fooled.

Each apartment can house a family of six.

Through my childhood,I had hungered for education.

①The train slowed down to half its speed.

②This will help warm up the soil.

③Don’t dirty your clothes.

④His hair is beginning to grey.

Part Ⅱ Writ ing

E-mail(电子邮件)
