在人类历史上，疫苗的发明和接种让许多重大疾病得以有效的预防和抑制，以促进人类生命的健康与延续。2014年10月，比尔·盖茨（Bill Gates）基金会在纽约举办了一次通过照片和杂志宣传疫苗的大型活动，这次活动时间持续半年之久，旨在宣扬疫苗对人类健康所产生的巨大积极影响，并表彰十位发明疫苗拯救人类生命的英雄。

已故华裔科学家周健博士，因发明世界上第一支癌症疫苗——宫颈癌疫苗，就位于这十位被选出来而得到大力表彰的英雄之列。

比尔·盖茨基金会邀请著名摄影师Annie Leibovitz为这次活动摄下了十位发明疫苗拯救人类生命的英雄（如已故者则由其家人代表）。这十位英雄，是从世界上众多疫苗研究和发明的科学家中精心挑选出来，他们是医学卫生研究领域的代表。他们依次是：Dr Stanley Plotkin（Rubella Vaccine风疹疫苗），Deborah Sabin（其父 Dr Albert Sabin，Oral Polio Vaccine口服脊椎灰质炎疫苗）；Dr Ruth Bishop（Rotavirus Vaccine轮状病毒疫苗）；Dr Kim Lee Sim and Dr Stephen Hoffman（New Malaria Vaccine疟疾疫苗）；Dr Peter Salk（其父Dr Jonas Salk灭活脊椎灰质炎疫苗）；Dr Marc Laforce（Meningitis Vaccine脑膜炎疫苗）；Dr Xiaoyi Sun[（孙小依）其已故丈夫周健（Dr Jian Zhou）和Dr Ian Frazer，Human Papillomavirus Vaccine宫颈癌疫苗]；Dr Peter Paradiso（Pneumococcal Disease Vaccine肺炎双球菌病疫苗）；以及Jeryl Hilleman（其父Dr Maurice Hilleman，more than thirty vaccines三十几种疫苗）。

The portrait subjects from left to right on the top row are: Dr Stanley Plotkin, developer of the Rubella Vaccine; Deborah Sabin whose father Dr Albert Sabin, developed the Oral Polio Vaccine; Dr Ruth Bishop led a team that isolated rotavirus and helped to discover the vaccine; Dr Kim Lee Sim and Dr Stephen Hoffman are working on a new malaria vaccine; Dr Peter Salk whose father, Dr Jonas Salk, developed the inactivated polio vaccine; Dr Marc Laforce is founding director of the Meningitis Vaccine Project. From left to right on the bottom row are: Dr Xiaoyi Sun whose late husband Dr Jian Zhou, co-developed human papillomavirus vaccine with Dr Ian Frazer; Dr Peter Paradiso has worked on multiple vaccine, particularly for pneumococcal disease vaccine; and Jeryl Hilleman whose father Dr Maurice Hilleman, developed or perfected more than thirty vaccines, including eight used in vaccine programs around the world today.
