I am truly honored to be invited by the editor, Ms. Serena Dong to pen an introductory note for this beautiful "Oil Pastel" book authored by a prominent artist and teacher, Mr. Lu Zhengxian.

Being a soft pastel artist myself, I view this book as an evolution of oil pastel which being carefully prepared to inspire all levels from beginners to the advanced artists who seek the knowledge of this medium. All instructions and theories are clearly explained with accompaniment of practical photographs. Mr. Lu gathered all basic yet the thoughtful theories for immediate and further practices, cultivation and enhancing the readers' courage to create fresh new artworks.

I especially like the detail explanation on the colors. At a glance, the instruction is arranged with convenience to run through and to tapping the essence of color complimentary and relationship. When painting is all about colors, the hues serve as the primary invitation to attract viewers, the readers will benefit greatly from the psychological phenomenon how to use colors to accompany the composition and perspectives. Every step is easy to understand and to strengthening art appearances.

The book reflects the way Mr. Lu would approach his own art. Although, I admit, when the readers will surely absorb his influences, the decision on the creation and colors is based entirely on the artist's fabulous sense. Mr. Lu's analytical instructions are truly essential and sumptuous. Thus, giving the readers various viewpoints to develop and arriving at a remarkable result in using oil pastel.

作为一名使用色粉进行日常创作的绘画者，以我的个人视角来看，这本书是对油画棒绘画技法的一次突破，从初学者到高级画家都可以在书中汲取到如何使用这种画材的灵感。书中的绘画方法与理论全部配有精美实用的图片。作者为课堂及拓展练习收录了大量基础性却富有深度的绘画知识，以培养和提升读者的信心去创作出新颖的作品。
