Part 1 Fashion Illustration

Fashion is defined as the garment that changes constantly,and this change may proceed more rapidly than in most other fields of human activities.To draw a fashion sketch is the first step in fashion design,and the following garment terms describe the fashion style of individual design sketch.

1.Design Sketch

(1)Casual Shirt:It should be designed for wearing inside or outside the trousers.Collars,short or long sleeves and pockets are usual features in this style.The front opening can be from neck to bottom or a short opening from the neck downwards with eyelet holes and lacing.

(2)Formal Shirt:There is often pleating or frilling on the front.And a fly front is also used in these types of shirts,collars and long sleeves with single or double cuffs.

(3)Business Garment:The shirt is designed with collar,long sleeves,single or double cuffs,with or without a yoke,and always worn inside the trousers.The whole style of this shirt should give a smart appearance to the wearer(Fig.5-1).

(4)Trousers:The term refers to garment designed for formal,business or town-wear.Formal trousers are worn with a dinner jacket or tuxedo(USA)and are usually in black color with a single strip of black braid over the outside leg seam.As a full formal dress,a black tailed-coat is worn with a double row of braid trousers.This style of trousers is cut to fit in or above the waist,and keep the garment in position with braces,side straps,elastic with tabs,or elastic with metal slide fasteners.Side seam,hips part,cash pockets and waistband with or without pleats can be designed,according to current fashion trends,and the trousers bottom have always been un-cuffed or plain bottom today.

(5)Slacks:This term can be used to describe trousers designed for leisure occasions,which hangs from the waist or hips,and is kept in place by one of the self-supporting methods.The pockets can be on the side,hips,and in forms of cash,patch or with button-holes,with various shapes at the front edge.The finish to the bottoms and final shape must be in line with up-to-date trends.

(6)Pants:The trousers are designed in a similar manner of the sportswear for a particular sport,such as ski-pants.They have a great variety of designs and fabrics(Fig.5-2).

2.Production Sketch

Production sketch is named as workroom sketch,it is a clear and accurate drawn sketch of a garment that shows the important pattern-cutting details,such as darts,seams,topstitching details,proportions,etc.

(1)T-Shirt:A plain,short sleeve,knitted shirt with a round neck or V-neck.It may be printed with various design patterns or motifs at front or back or both sides.It may be worn as under-wear(Fig.5-3).

(2)Leisure Shirt:It can also be worn outside of the trousers,but usually has long sleeves with a front opening from top to bottom.A collar styled to modern up-to-date trends is necessary.And the pockets,a yoke with pleats at back,or a pleat through the center back are design features of this type of shirt(Fig.5-4).

(3)Western Shirt:A man-tapered shirt with yoke at front and back,a pointed collar,two patch pockets with flaps and fancy snap closures on front placket and cuffs(Fig.5-5).

(4)Shorts:This term is given to the bifurcated garment finished just above the knee,probably the most famous style being the Bermuda shorts,which are cut close to the leg and finished just above the knee.Shorts are designed for casual or sports wear(Fig.5-6).
