Chapter 3. Reporting and Analysis: Getting Ready for Growth

The main benefit of an integrated solution is better information to support crucial business decisions. Simply obtaining information may improve the way your business operates. For example, if your employees know that their Internet browsing activity is tracked, the quality of the sites they visit will improve. The same applies to your business system. In this chapter, we will see the key aspects of a reporting strategy. As part of that, we will touch upon all of the features in the SAP Business ONE application that are relevant for reporting. In the process, the following areas will be covered:

  • Reporting architecture and its forward-looking vision - How does it fit in? I will explain the key role reporting plays within your SAP solution.
  • Real-time reporting - The information in SAP is real time. What does this mean for your reporting strategy? We will look at how information can be categorized in SAP.
  • BI - What is BI? We will look at the core aspect of what BI means for your reporting strategy.
  • The difference between data and information – Let's not forget that we are seeking information. Data is not equal to information in this sense.
  • UDFs – We will take a thorough look at UDFs. UDFs are key aspects of every SAP implementation, and you will be able to understand their purpose and create your own.
  • Reporting strategy – How can you apply the concepts in this chapter to your own project? I will help you understand the key aspects of a successful reporting strategy for your business.
  • SAP Business ONE reporting tools explained – We will use SAP reporting tools to create queries using Query Generator, Query Wizard, Drag and Relate, and the Alert system.
  • The chapter closes with a brief positioning of the other more high-end reporting tools which will be covered later in this book.
