THE BIOGRAPHY OF TIAN XUEYUAN

Tian Xueyuan graduated from Economy Department of Peking University in August，1964. He worked in the Ministry of Education and some other state organs during August，1964 and April，1979，worked on population and economy researches in Economy Research Institute of Chinese Academy of Social Sciences during April，1979 and May，1982，worked as a top visiting scholar in American East West Center during May，1982 and June，1983，and was the dean of the Population Institute of Chinese Academy of Social Sciences during April，1984 and December，1998. He now is a member of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences’ Academic Consultation Committee，researcher，tutor of doctors，country’s expert with exceptional contributions. His major social parttime jobs are：a member of Study Group of State Department’s Degree Committee，the vice president of PSC and Society of Social Economy and Culture Communication of China，an expert member of State’s Family Planning Commission，a member of IUSSP，and so on.

Since 1970s，there are 35 books he （and as the chief editor） wrote，such as On Population of the New Period，Calamity of the Big Country—Population Problems of China Today，and Demography，more than 500 papers （including more than 30 pieces of English，Russian and Japanese papers），such as Exonerate For Ma Yinchu’s New Theory on Population，On the Sustainable Development of Population and National’s Economy，and more than 30 research reports have been published. More than 5 millions words are written by himself. His representative works are all in The Collected Works of Tian Xueyuan 1，2，3，4，5. He has taken charged of 6 significant national projects，cooperated with United Nations Population Fund，America and Japan on 5 projects since 1980s. He created original and systematic research findings in many areas，such as，rectifying on population theory，population development strategy，population control and comprehensive development of community，family economy and childbirth，aging of population and social security，and population and sustainable development. He has given reports in China and in America，Japan，Holland，Belgium and Australia many times，and received universal praise and recognition. He was awarded “Young Expert with Significant National Contributions” in 1984，the first prize of “National Science and Technology Advancement Findings” in 1988，“International Intellectual Celebrity” by IBC in 1991，and his achievements were introduced in “Successful People”. He was taken in “World 5000 Celebrity” by ABI in 1995，and his story was introduced in it. In addition，he was awarded “Chinese Population Prize”，which is the highest level of population prize，and “Five Top” Project Prize of cultural and ethical progress in 1996，“National Book Prize” in 2000，the first prize of “6th Session Chinese National Book Prize” in 2003. There are more than 10 of his scientific research findings were honored with ministries and commissions’ special prize and the first prize.
