Lesson 8 Letter of Introduction 介绍信
介绍信是机关团体、企事业单位派人到其他单位联系工作、了解情况或参加各种社会活动时用的函件，主要用于联系工作、洽谈业务、参加会议、了解情况时的自我说明。对于持信人而言，介绍信具有介绍、证明双重作用，所以介绍信要交代清楚持信人的姓名、身份、接洽事项和向接洽单位或个人提出的希望。
Dear Sirs，
The letter will be handed to you by Ma Zhonghua，our senior representative，who is going to visit London next week，where we are planning to extend our interests.
We have established business relations with you for many years so that we feel that we cannot do better than to arrange for him to get in touch with you upon his arrival in London. With your knowl-edge and experience of conditions in the European Market you are better able to give the help he will need than anyone else we know. We hope it would not be too much to ask you to provide Mr. Ma with letters of recommendation where you think they would be useful.
We shall regard as a personal favor any useful experience and suggestion you provided to him and shall reciprocate at any time.

意思相同的短语还有extend our business，extend our market。

8．provide sb． with sth． 向某人提供什么
provide在这里做动词，表示“提供”的意思，也可以说成provide sth. to/for sb.。例如，“我们将给你公司提供大量的产品宣传册。”可以翻译成：
We shall provide you with a large number of pamphlets.
We shall provide a large number of pamphlets to/for you.
provide还可以做动词，表示“规定”的意思，后面接名词从句。
例如：我们的销售合同规定卖方必须在签订合同后一个月之内装运货物。可以翻译成：
Our sales contract provides that the sellers shall ship the goods within one month after signing the contract.
9．letter of recommendation 推荐信
与介绍信大体相同，都是介绍某人或某公司给第三者。但是推荐信还含有推荐之意，往往会说一些令人信服的称颂某人或某公司优点或声誉的话，从而让收信人对持信人产生好印象，愿意与之交往，或者提供帮助。
